Mr Lamentables rolled his eyes when I mentioned this (he is not a fan of cold weather).

:-) I know where you're coming from. My boyfriend is orginally from Vancouver Island and we met at university in Prince George, and he absolutely hated every second of his four years there. The cold bothered him, of course (Vancouver Island has very rainy, warm winters and it only snows once or twice a year) but I think it was the barrenness of the landscape that he really hated. Compared the rich green coastal vegitation of Vancouver, Prince George seemed desolate. He really dislikes the North and he's much happier here in southern Ontario.

I'm still mulling over ideas for fic, which is closer than I thought I'd ever get.

This is exciting! I'm so happy you're at least considering writing something, and I think you'll find that the more you write the characters, the better you'll know them (or, at least your versions of them). I completely understand what you mean when you talk about the concern of having to share The Boys with others, and your interpretation being compared to what others think/written/watch. It's tricky but worthwhile, and I hope you'll continue to test the writing waters.

And then there's the language issue with my being even more English than I previously realised...

Hahaha, don't worry about it! I always consider the fact that real-life experience does not limit or justify one's ability to write about something or someone. Authors use their imaginations: that's why it's possible for someone who lives in Los Angeles or Austin or London to write about Fraser and Ray having adventures in northern Canada. So don't worry too much about RL cultural reference points: you just need to research the key details and leave the rest up to your wonderful brain. I promise you'll come up with something terrific.
