I think you can have a supporting image or a counterpoint image, and if you go with the counterpoint image, then it can show the reverse or flipside of what actually happens in the story.
YES! Absolutely. I mean, the boys get together in the first place, so some of the groundwork is established for a positive turn -- assuming they have enough in common and enough love for each other to work it out.
It makes me think of MOTB, actually, where the punches foreshadow the underwater groping and buddy breathing kiss, and then the last shot of them smiling giddily at each other strikes the balance between the two extremes.
I don't even look at foreshadowing until I get near the end and need to see what threads I have available for weaving into the ending. Sometimes then I'll go back and tweak something to make it a little brighter, and dull down something that throws the balance off.
